Dae ye ken fit a Tattie bogle is? An’ fit aboot a hurcheon? Scots, the language of Robert Burns, spoken by over 1.5m people across Scotland today, is not just at the heart of the country's rich linguistic heritage but also a core part of the Scottish curriculum.
To support this the Scottish Government commissioned the Scots Language Learning resource to support early years and secondary school teachers in the use of Scots language in the classroom.
Working in partnership with a learning specialist, I developed the platform strategy, setting out the ambition for the learning resource, developing a core cast of characters and a modular toolkit of elements that allowed us to deliver engaging media-rich learning experience within the constraints of a relatively modest budget.
For the project I co-authored scripts, designed the games, and commissioned and produced the animated segments, bringing together a suite of activities aligned to the core curriculum. The resource draws on the strong dialect tradition of Scots, using the distinct regional voices to deliver content in a form recognisable to children across Scotland’s communities.
The resource has reached over 200,000 school age children and continues to respond to and evolve with the growing role of Scots language in the curriculum.
