The Scottish Design Galleries brings together craft and creativity from every corner of the land. The exhibition offers a wealth of rich visual engagement, but how do we make visitors pause, look beyond the aesthetic and consider how is it used, why that shape, what does it mean?
Positioned at the heart of the design gallery the interactive table draws the visitor in, to pause, interact and interrogate designed artefacts from the collection.
Reconstructing the humble wellington from its constituent parts the visitor learns about its cultural impact, from Edwardian royals to Glastonbury celebrities understanding that even the most functional product can take on specific cultural meaning.
Neil Poulton’s Scopas Light, a deceptively simple form is broken down into its constituent parts for the visitor to reconstruct, building an understanding of the design process behind the final form and through experimentation and appreciate of the subtle act of balancing a form through subtraction and addition.
In contrast Lynne MacLachlan’s Statement necklace, an intricate, delicately machined object hangs in a glass case while an interactive video hangs in-front of it, taking the visitor through its conception, design and creation. Revealing the simple rules dictating its algorithmic form and surprisingly handmade craft process of finishing it.
