The Box is one of the largest new Museum projects in the UK, a £46 million development bringing together over 2 million objects from six collections, and media archives.
Building a coherent narrative over a collection ranging from delicate porcelain thimbles to massive timber ship figureheads called for a structured but flexible interpretation platform that offered a direct route from the curators to the public.
The answer was a custom designed digital platform capable of delivering digital interpretation in myriad forms throughout the museum.
At the heart of the platform was an intuitive Content Management System (CMS), extensively refined and evolved to provide an intuitive but powerful authoring experience for curators. This was tied to a flexible presentation system implementing a design system which offers visitors with a consistent experience throughout the museum while allowing the format and style of the experience to adapt to each theme and subject.
The curators have entered over 10,000 records to date, deploying content over more than 30 exhibition spaces. The platform has delivered on its promise of allowing curators to continually evolve and expand the on-site interpretation allowing end to end planning, authoring and installation of new digital interpretation for exhibits without the need for external support or assistance.
