L.S. Lowry is immortalised in British culture for his matchstick men, cats and dogs. Sometimes perceived as an outsider artist, his deceptively simple style masks a sophisticated understanding of colour, composition and narrative. This makes Lowry's work an ideal platform for exploring the principles of visual communication.

The brief: to capture and distil the widely acclaimed work of the learning and engagement team at the Lowry into a learning resource for use in classrooms.

Working with Lowry’s famous work ‘Going to the Match’ I developed an online learning app which layers core elements of the DfE Art & Design curriculum programmes, including creative expression, techniques and art history into a drawing app that lets each user create their own Lowry masterpiece.

The app was developed progressively, from lo-fi prototypes through to a finished product, with classroom testing and stakeholder input at each stage. Adopting an iterative, user-centred process allowed us to refine and condense the learning experience into a deceptively simple app while meeting a wide range of curriculum goals.
